Porcelain Veneers Q & A

What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are ultra-thin shells that change the appearance of your front teeth. A veneer can alter the shape, size, and color of a damaged or discolored tooth for a more polished, uniform look. Veneers are the gold standard for a Hollywood-worthy smile, which appears straight and white.

What can porcelain veneers treat?

Veneers act as stain-resistant porcelain coverings to hide cosmetic damage and discoloration from:

  • Chipped teeth
  • Fractured teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Teeth worn from grinding (bruxism)
  • Pits or grooves in the tooth enamel
  • Mildly crooked teeth
  • Severe tooth discoloration
  • Gapped teeth

Porcelain veneers can address several different cosmetic concerns at once to enhance your smile.

What does the porcelain veneers process involve?

Placing porcelain veneers typically takes two visits. After performing a comprehensive dental exam that includes digital X-rays, Dr. Wilhelm prepares your teeth for veneers. He carefully removes a small portion of enamel from your teeth to make room for the veneers. This process allows the veneers to blend in with your teeth and eliminates any bulk.

To create your custom-made veneers, Dr. Wilhelm takes highly accurate digital impressions of your teeth. Unlike traditional impressions, which are goopy and uncomfortable, digital impressions don’t cause a mess or irritate your gag reflex.

Porcelain veneers take around 2-3 weeks to create in a dental lab. While you wait, Dr. Wilhelm may protect your teeth with temporary veneers. He then places your veneers at your final visit.

After placing your veneers, Dr. Wilhelm makes any necessary adjustments before cementing them permanently. Veneers are fully functional once placed, so you can enjoy your new smile right away.

How long do porcelain veneers last?

With proper care, porcelain veneers last for 10-30 years. How long your veneers last often depends on the steps you take to care for them. You can help preserve your veneers by:

  • Brushing and flossing twice a day
  • Avoiding hard and chewy candies
  • Visiting for teeth cleanings once every six months
  • Wearing a night guard to protect against teeth grinding
  • Using a sports guard when engaging in physical activity
